Huddersfield Star Wheelers – Time Trial – Sunday 3rd July 2016

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Time Trial

There are only 9 days to go before you can enter the Huddersfield Star Wheelers Time Trial. The event will be held on Sunday 3rd July 2016 but the closing date is midnight Tuesday 21st June.

The event is a Yorkshire SPOCO event and takes place on the undulating V915 course between the Sovereign junction and Hoylandswaine roundabout. This is not a course for the record breakers given the 500ft of climbing along this 10 mile course, and depending on the conditions of the day riders can be easily 20% slower than on a flat course.

So why not give it a go? You don’t need a ‘machine’ – just a bike, an optional rear light, and the will to empty the tank over ten miles. This is not a race – this is a personal test so enter on line and join in the fun.

The event starts at 10:30am and signing on will be from 9:30am and further instructions will follow to all entrants. Full details and on line entry can be found at https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/12121

Huddersfield Star Wheelers have a long history of providing high quality and safe events and those events rely on people helping. In order to ensure the safety of your fellow cyclists and to ensure the event runs smoothly we always welcome members and friends who want to marshal, push off or generally make a lot of noise. Please contact Steve McCall via stevemccall@talktalk.net if you want assist on the day.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Hold Brand New Hill Climb Competition

Hill Climb

Huddersfield Star Wheelers are proud to announce a brand new and challenging Hill Climb competition in the Colne Valley on Wednesday 17th August.

Following the success of the first Tour de Yorkshire, Slaithwaite’s steep sided valley has been chosen for a new inter local club competition which starts just below the viaduct on Holme Lane and climbs up towards the Rose and Crown atop Cop Hill. The route is just short of a mile and climbs around 420 feet averaging out at 8% with some steep ramps thrown in for good measure.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers are inviting members from all clubs in the Huddersfield area and we’re looking for all riders to come along and just give it ago and mix pleasure with pain. For those whom the pain may be too much, we’ll also welcome anyone who can come along and support the riders or marshal and just make this a great event.

The event headquarters is at Gutsibits along side the canal at Slaithwaite. Click on the blue motorbike below for more information. Signing on will be from from 18:45 with start times of 19:30 and we’re taking £4 on the day which includes insurance.

So please come and give it go . . It may not be fun but will be painful and ENJOYABLE!!! We know we live in a hilly part of the country so let’s make the best of it.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers – Club Dinner and Awards

Huddersfield Star Wheelers celebrated another successful year at the annual club dinner held at the Beaumont Arms, Kirkheaton. Trophies, medals, cups and toilet seats were awarded across a wide range of cycling disciplines, to members who raced for, regularly rode with and supported the club throughout the year. All winners including our club president who was awarded the road race trophy. An excellent night was had by all, and we’d welcome more riders to compete for the awards this year to build on the fantastic success of 2015.

CityConnect – Get Involved

City Connect - Get Involved

CityConnect are looking for cyclists who regularly ride between Bradford and Leeds to become champions for the new segregated cycle route. They are also interested in the views and opinions of cyclists in the region because this is a significant investment not only in Leeds and Bradford, but also in the town centre of Huddersfield and routes from the Colne Valley and through to Cooper Bridge from Brighouse.

Pete Zanzoterra, a sustainable travel consultant who works on the CityConnect Advisory Group, is organising two meetings, one in Bradford (Tues 1st March) and one in Seacroft (Thurs 10th March). Pete wants to reach as many regular cyclists as possible, especially people who cycle for sport and leisure.

The meetings are both on Eventbrite and Pete would like to invite you and if possible, to ask you to make as many other cyclists aware of them. Here are the details:

March 1st in Bradford –  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-bradford-to-leeds-cycle-superhighway-tickets-21759112090

March 10th in Seacroft – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-leeds-cycle-superhighway-tickets-21760664734

It is important that we build an understanding on why this sort of infrastructure is being built. We will need all the help we can get in making it a success and getting new or less regular cyclists to use it. This is a critical moment in convincing local authorities to fund more cycling infrastructure in the future and we want to mobilise all of the cycling support that we can muster. It is also a chance to discuss cycling provision and influence what we build in the future.

If you would like to speak at the meeting or know anyone else that would like to represent a club or a group of cyclists please contact Pete. There will be plenty of chances for anyone attending the meeting to get their voice heard.

National Hill Climb Championship on Huddersfield Star Wheelers’ Hill

Granville Sydney

Cast your memory back to 1992. Chris Boardman, just prior to turning professional, and following success on Huddersfield Star Wheelers hill climb by winning the Granville Sidney Memorial Trophy, suggested that our very own Jackson Bridge climb be used for the National Championship. It’s worth noting Boardman himself had already won the nationals the previous four years so he knew what he was talking about.

The nationals came to Jackson bridge two years later in 1994 following a “mammoth amount of organisation” by “Eric Bidulph, John and Chris Giles, and Ian Hodgkinson” and was won by Jeff Wright after having come second the three previous years.

Considering hill climbing legend Granville Sydney had won the nationals six times between 1963 and 1973, who specialised in “short, sharp, horrendously steep climbs” and “sported facial hair and never ever shaved his legs”, then you know how special it is for the National Hill Climb to make a return 21 years after it’s last outing.

Let’s make this years’ event even more special by having our club colours visible all the way up the hill, so we don’t end up waiting another 21 years for our next visit of the nationals!

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Hill Climb Results

Hill Climb

The 42nd running of the Huddersfield Star Wheelers Granville Sydney Memorial Hill Climb was held on Saturday 10th October. The weather was set fair for this prestigious event and with a field of 96 riders coming from all over the country, as well as Switzerland and Guernsey, it was set to be a tight and very competitive affair. Back to defend his title was Dan Evans, the present national hill climb champion from Colwyn in Wales. He was to be challenged by three ex national champions in the guise of Tejvan Pettinger, Matt Clinton and five times national champion, Jim Henderson.

It turned out be a tight affair with Dan retaining his title in a time of 4mins 11 seconds for the 1540 yard course up the climb from Jackson Bridge to Tinker’s Monument at Cumberworth. In fact, the main challenge came from two other competitors instead of the ex national champions who all performed excellently. In second place was Adam Kenway (Belper, Derbyshire) just 4 seconds slower than Dan, followed just 2 seconds adrift by Joseph Clark, also from Belper. Perhaps one of the best performances came from a junior racer in the form of Tim Home who finished sixth overall with a stunning time of 4mins 27secs. Tejvan and Matt had to settle for 4th & 5th places respectively. Jim Henderson, fresh out of retirement, finished 8th overall and won the Veterans prize in a time of 4mins 28secs.

Two other prizes were scooped up by travelling riders in the form of a father and daughter from Guernsey. Heather Despres won the Junior Ladies prize with a time of 6mins 5secs with her father Nick winning the Men’s Vet 50+ category with a time of 5mins 2secs.

The Ladies prize was won by Lou Bates of Nottingham in a time of 5mins 29 secs. Nathan Allatt of Castleford won the male Juvenile prize and Ruby Boyes of Huddersfield Star Wheelers took the Juvenile female prize.

This race was a precursor to the National Hill Climb Championship which is to be held on the same hill on Sunday 25th October at 10.30 where there will be 240 competitors taking part, many of these riders having taken part in the Huddersfield Star Wheelers event.
