Huddersfield Star Wheelers Go Ride for Yorkshire!

British Cycling staged this year’s Inter Regional Youth Mountain Bike Championships this weekend at Hadleigh Farm on the course used for the London 2012 Olympics. The championships act as a focal point for the development of youth cycle racing within each of the regions of Great Britain, and allows young riders to come together and compete in a team environment. For some this weekend was the biggest sporting event they have ever done, for others the first step on their path to becoming Olympic Champions, and for everyone it was a unique experience and provided lifelong memories.

The event was open to British regional Under 16 Teams by invitation only and Yorkshire sent a team of seven riders for the mountain bike event. Three of the seven members of the team were local riders, Harry Hardcastle former Kirklees Cycling Academy, Ruby Boyes of Huddersfield Star Wheelers and Emelia Clarke of Holmfirth CC and Huddersfield Star Wheelers.

The riders competed against teams from all over the country. The events included a skills test on Friday, a handicap race and eliminator on Saturday, team relay and cross country on Sunday. The two Scottish teams dominated the event finishing 1st and 2nd with the Central team in 3rd place. Yorkshire were in 5th place which is a great result as they were 1 girl short as one rider had to drop out. Individually the Yorkshire boys won two events with Ben Turner winning the Skills competition and Tom Pidcock winning the Handicap and Cross Country.

The event was a great success and the Yorkshire team had a fantastic weekend which shows the level of commitment locally with many go-ride sessions and events available for all local children to attend. Huddersfield Star Wheelers 10 Mile Time Trial

Huddersfield Star Wheelers has a long history of being a club that promotes and organises cycling race events. These events often ‘sell out’ and the club is recognised regionally for hosting well managed and safe events that attract some of the best riders in the region. Sunday’s 10 mile Time Trial on the cryptically named V915 course continued that tradition, and thanks again go to Matt Bourne for organising a fantastic event.

Cool early conditions with a slight wind from the south meant it was a day for some good times from the assembled riders, who ranged from complete novices to seasoned specialists, on compact road bikes to full aero machines. Rider feedback was excellent and many commented on how safe the course was with the support of the many marshals, the number of people out supporting the race, and thanks go to the timers and starter.

The overall winner was Alistair Wareham of Team Swift at 21m 53s. Alisa Healy of The Racing Chance Foundation was first woman at 28m 44s. Nathan Allatt of RN&RM Cycling Association was first 23 and under at 22m 54s. Peter Holdsworth of HD Revolutions was first 24 to 39 at 23m 44s. Julian Ramsbottom of Pedal Pushers was the first 40 and over at 22m 58s.

Congratulations go to the winners and to everyone who took part on the day and raced. Special thanks go to the marshals who gave up their time to keep the riders safe, and to everyone who came along to support our fantastic club.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Eric Biddulph Memorial Road Race 2015

Huddersfield Star Wheelers hosted the 2015 Eric Biddulph Memorial Road Race today in some not so Summer weather. The rain, cold and low cloud couldn’t stop an almost full field of riders racing hard over the 80km course near Birdsedge in Kirklees.

An early breakaway of three riders, Oliver Bridgewood of Bespoke Cycling, David Beachill of Geared Up Cycles and Joshua Ruddiman of HD Revolutions managed to stay away once they broke loose of the main group. With two laps to go the main peleton upped the pace but the damage was already done. A lone rider tried to bridge the gap but the the breakaway was too strong.

Congratulations go to Oliver who eventually took the win by around three seconds from David, with Josh making it third. The first Junior, Max McMurdo of Team Vertex followed shortly behind in the main group. a big well done to all the riders competing in not the best of conditions on an already tough Yorkshire course.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers would like to thank all of the competitors, marshals, drivers and everyone who came along in what were quite dismal conditions to make this another great event.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers – Tuesday Ride Changes Start Point

Tuesday Club runs will now départ Earnshaws as of 19th May 2015.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers’ popular Tuesday evening road ride will now be meeting and departing from Earnshaws “ two wheel centre”, on Manchester Road, HD1 3LE. Anyone who has ridden for the club for some time will recognise the scene pictured above and know that at times, on a busy Summer’s evening with over 50 riders present, it can be quite a squeeze.

There are a number of safety reasons for moving the ride start to Earnshaws including a safe and spacious meeting area, available off-road parking and most importantly all rides will start with us filtering into a bus and cycle lane and not into main stream traffic.

As an added bonus Earnshaws’ cycle shop will stay open until 19:00 on Tuesdays, so those members who arrive early can take a look around and buy any last minute supplies, and hopefully in the future, buy Huddersfield Star Wheelers kit!

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Friday Evening Track Sessions

Huddersfield Star Wheelers have exclusive use of the Brooksbank closed circuit cycle circuit in Elland on Friday nights from
7pm to 8.30pm. Everyone is welcome whether you’re a Steady Eddie or a Pacey Peta – there will be sessions for everyone.

The sessions are structured to improve race skills and strength with various drills and timed laps. The sessions are aimed at over 16s only with road bikes. Youth riders are permitted with club coach accreditation.

The sessions are only £4 for each member of Huddersfield Star Wheelers. Non club members can attend on invitation of an existing member and the price is £5.

Hudderfsield Star Wheelers Off Road Season in Full Swing

Following on from the good turnout at the Nutcracker Races at Dalby Forest last weekend, we have the first Yorkshire Cyclo Cross event of the season proudly hosted by Huddersfield Star Wheelers at Newsome High School tomorrow night – Wednesday 29th April. Proceedings commence at 7:00pm for the under 14s and at 7:30pm for everyone else. For anyone not competing please make every effort to come along, cheer on your fellow club members and help Graham Piccavey put on a fantastic event.

We also now have the next three months MTB rides uploaded to the ride calendar so if you want to get a bit dirty after the fabulous weather of the last few days, check out the calendar and turn up on Saturday mornings at 10:00am at various locations around Huddersfield.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Continue Their Winning Ways!

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Go-Rider and Lindley Infants pupil Evie Smith has just become the Under 7 British Schools Cycling Association (BSCA) cyclo-cross National Champion! She was top of the ‘field’ at Abbey Stadium Reddtich after the off road race. This win was hot on the wheels of Ruby Boyes becoming Under 15 girls Yorkshire Region Cyclo-Cross champ in February this year at Spen Valley.

BSCA was founded in 1967 and promotes the sport and pastime of cycling for all young people, whether experienced or beginners. They hold a series of regional and national competitions in eight different cycling disciplimes in a safe and controlled environment.

Cyclo Cross literally represents the ‘grass roots’ of cycling sport that is accessible to almost anyone with a bicycle, a helmet, the right environment and is prepared to get muddy. Huddersfiled Star Wheelers Go Ride section is affiliated with British Cycling and run under the Sports England’s Club Mark which is the standard for high quality community sports clubs.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers set to host the first Summer Cross Race!

For the second year in succession, Huddersfield Star Wheelers are proud to announce that we will be hosting the first race of the Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross season on Wednesday 29th April 2015.

The event will be held at Newsome High School and there will be two races, the first being for under 14s which will start at 7:00pm and the second for over 14s which will start at 7:30pm. Both races are open so any one can turn up and race in their age group.

C A Rhodes Memorial Award

The C.A.Rhodes Memorial was instigated in 1961 as a tribute to the memory of Charles Arthur Rhodes (1895-1961) pictured centre. The award is regarded as the greatest distinction Yorkshire Cycling can bestow and has recognised two Huddersfield Star Wheelers: Women’s World Pursuit Champion, Yvonne McGregor and four times National Hill Climb Champion, Granville Sydney.
